Honorable Mention
Flower
Emusing ( Lois Jones)

The small seed had shown itself in the shape
of a wish bone. Its fate would be subject
to the way its petals multiplied, the way

the bees hummed and touched, in how
its center grew more golden so that the day
was born of it. You watered and waited--

hoped for sunlight, set your knees in the damp
ground to feel the rumble of spring. But when
the winds came like a vagrant to steal her,

blowing her colors into the darkened earth,
you knew she was a dahlia, her slender stem,
straight and perfect; leaves raised to catch

lost petals. Her pink was more than flesh,
more than the root that grew in you. This bloom
held the birth of all things, made the earth

spin on its slender stem, carried you to the light.
